Mrs. Newell - Classroom Spotlight

Wow! It’s hard to believe it’s already the end of the first quarter!!! It seems like only yesterday that we were excitedly returning for the start of a new school year! The students have all been hard at work academically and doing a spectacular job following the Cardinal Code.

In math we have been having a lot of fun. We have all been working on place value, rounding numbers using a number line and using rounding to check the reasonableness of our answers. The fifth grade students have also been working with decimals. They have learned how to read the numbers correctly and how to add and subtract decimals. They are now working on multiplying and dividing decimals. The fourth grade students have been busy solving multiple step word problems with addition and subtraction and using tape diagrams.

In reading the students have been practicing their fluency skills and identifying what a fluent reader looks and sounds like. They practice independently but also enjoy practicing together.  Other skills that we have been working on are identifying main idea and details, locating characters and identifying their traits, answering questions about a story by locating the information within the text, making inferences, and comparing and contrasting using venn diagrams.

It sure has been a busy start to a great year! I am so impressed by all of the students and their desire and drive to learn! Every day is a new day of learning and they always come to school ready for the new adventures that await them. I can’t wait for all the wonderful things we are going to accomplish together this year!
